Scraps to Scribes Writing Group

Next workshop will be announced soon!

You want to write. You wake up everyday intending to write. You have a lot of stories….in your head.

It is a new year and we are going to start the year by finishing one of those stories. We are going to generate a lot ideas and pick the best one to develop into a finished story. I’ll also introduce writing exercises to help us dig deeper into our work and improve our pros.

At the end of our eight weeks we will have a submission party. If you’ve never submitted before, I’ll show you how.

We welcome new and experienced writers.

Come join us! (Wine and snacks included!)

What is Scraps to Scribes?

Scraps to Scribes was started by Jen Hitchcock. She had a box full of “scraps” of stories she intended to finish. She started this group to find like-minded writers to motivate one another to finish their work. I attended Jen’s first session three years ago and every one since. I was excited when Jen passed the reigns to me. I always look forward to working with all the amazing writers that come to our workshops.

Hosted by:

Kim Koehler (original member of Back to Scraps)
Kim is working a series of essays about raising her daughter who was born with a life-threatening heart condition. This year her essay Tiny Relics was published in Hippocampus Magazine. (It was written in a Scraps to Scribes workshop!)

BACK TO SCRAPS is open to creative minds of all ability. Bring a notebook, pen or whatever means you use to write. We spend the evening doing a series of simple and fun writing exercises. The main goal of the evening is to loosen up your creative self in a safe and supportive environment so that you walk out the door inspired, with some great possibilities for future writing pieces.

$5.00 suggested donation

BACK TO SCRAPS is led by Jen Hitchcock. Jen worked in the past as a freelance writer, most notably as a music journalist. She has been published by the LA Weekly, Tattoo Savage, Razorcake and a multitude of other publications, including her own self-published fanzine ZYZXX. Most recently she wrote the script for a comedic webseries called Ninety Something.

Jen on the origins of BACK TO SCRAPS:
“A few years ago I realized that even though I identified as a writer, I rarely sat down TO write, my time and energy got caught up entirely in work and being a mom. I realized I was no longer doing even the smallest thing that I had done all my life–jotting down ideas inspired by things seen, heard, felt throughout my day on whatever was handy at the time (including but not limited to gum wrappers, torn pieces of notebook paper, the back of my hand). I felt a strong need to get back to that headspace and get back to writing, even if it was just a few inspired sentences on scraps of paper.
So, I started Back To Scraps three years ago as a means to etch out much needed time to get together with other creative people and work on filling our notebooks with writing ideas.”
