Marisa Futernick will be here reading and presenting from her book 13 Presidents!
Based on a cross-country road trip to visit all of America’s presidential libraries, 13 Presidents is an artist’s book that combines photographs from the journey with a suite of short stories. These texts mix fact and fiction, with each President from Herbert Hoover to George W. Bush serving as a protagonist. The photographs – shot on analogue film, they create a distorted sense of time – depict the everyday details of the towns that these men are from, including the homes where they were born, and their final resting places. Like the book’s texts, the images form a portrait of America that is both invented and true. Using place, socio-political histories, and archival material in a poetic and expansive way, 13 Presidents weaves together personal narrative with wider cultural observation.
